Cost and paying
How much does luxury rehab cost in Los Angeles?
Typical luxury residential stays in Los Angeles run about $30,000 to $65,000 for 30 days. Medical detox runs about $3,000 to $10,000 or more for 5 to 10 days. Facilities rarely publish prices, so ask for the total for your stay in writing.
Why is luxury rehab so expensive?
Small numbers of residents, high staff ratios, private homes in expensive neighborhoods and extras like chefs and wellness services. The clinical care itself is a smaller share of the price than many people expect.
Is a more expensive rehab better?
Not automatically. Licensing, accreditation, clinical staff and aftercare matter more than price.
Is Malibu rehab more expensive?
Often, yes. Third-party reports put some well-known Malibu programs well above the typical $30,000 to $65,000 a month range for Los Angeles.
Can I pay in installments?
Some programs offer payment plans or work with medical lenders. Read the terms carefully and avoid large non-refundable deposits.
Is at-home detox cheaper than a facility?
It depends on how many days of 24-hour nursing you need. Ask for a written quote after the medical assessment.
Insurance
Does insurance cover luxury rehab?
Often in part. Many luxury programs are in-network with PPO plans for the clinical part of care (detox, therapy, medical staff), while private rooms and amenities are paid out of pocket. HMO and Medi-Cal plans rarely cover private luxury programs. Ask for a written verification of benefits before you pay a deposit.
Is addiction treatment an essential health benefit?
Yes. Under the Affordable Care Act, mental health and substance use disorder services are essential health benefits for individual and small-group plans.
Does insurance cover detox?
Medically necessary detox is an essential health benefit, so most plans cover part of it, often more with PPO plans. Private suites, chefs and spa services are usually paid out of pocket.
Does insurance cover at-home detox?
Coverage for in-home medical detox varies by plan. Ask the at-home provider and your insurer before you start.
What if my insurance claim is denied?
You can appeal. Ask the program for the clinical records that support medical necessity, and ask your insurer for the reason in writing.
Will my employer see my insurance claims?
No. Your employer does not see your medical claims, and treatment records are protected by HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
Detox and withdrawal
How long does detox take?
Acute withdrawal usually lasts 3 to 7 days, and most medical detox stays run 5 to 10 days. Alcohol and benzodiazepine detox can take longer, because doses are tapered slowly to prevent seizures.
Is alcohol withdrawal dangerous?
It can be. Symptoms usually start 6 to 24 hours after the last drink. Seizures can occur, and delirium tremens, which can be life-threatening, typically appears 48 to 72 hours in. Medical supervision makes detox safe.
Is it safe to cut down on drinking on my own?
Tapering without medical guidance can still trigger dangerous withdrawal. Talk to a medical provider first.
Is it safe to stop Xanax cold turkey?
No. Stopping a benzodiazepine abruptly after regular use can cause seizures. Always taper under medical supervision. The full taper can continue for weeks or months as an outpatient.
How long does opioid withdrawal last?
Acute symptoms usually peak in 1 to 3 days and ease within about a week for short-acting opioids. Fentanyl and long-acting opioids can take longer.
Why is fentanyl detox different?
Fentanyl can stay in the body longer than expected, so starting buprenorphine too early can cause sudden, severe withdrawal. Experienced prescribers time it carefully.
Should I stay on medication after opioid detox?
For many people, yes. Staying on buprenorphine or methadone lowers the risk of relapse and overdose. It is a medical decision you make with your provider.
When do cravings stop?
Physical withdrawal ends within days to weeks, but cravings can come and go for months. That is why aftercare matters.
Do I need detox before residential rehab?
If you are physically dependent on alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids, yes. Many residences offer detox on site.
At-home detox
Is at-home detox safe?
It can be, with the right medical setup and the right patient. With a nurse on site 24 hours a day and daily provider visits, at-home detox works for many people. A history of withdrawal seizures or DTs, or serious health conditions, can make a facility the safer choice. The medical assessment decides.
How fast can at-home detox start?
Call (888) 530-5153 to start. An addiction-specialist medical provider evaluates new clients within 24 hours.
Can I detox somewhere other than my home?
Yes. Detox can take place at a destination of your choice, such as a private rental, for added comfort and privacy.
Who answers the at-home detox line?
Calls to (888) 530-5153 are answered by our at-home medical detox partner, not by this site. Calls are free and confidential.
Does at-home detox work?
At-home detox handles withdrawal safely for the right person. Ongoing treatment afterwards is what drives long-term recovery.
Choosing a program
Are luxury rehabs worth it?
They can be, if the clinical care is strong. Comfort and privacy help many people stay in treatment.
Do luxury rehabs work?
About 40% to 60% of people relapse at some point after treatment, similar to other chronic illnesses, and many go on to long-term recovery. Staying engaged in treatment and aftercare matters more than the setting.
What rehab has the highest success rate?
No facility has an independently verified highest success rate. Look for licensing, accreditation, evidence-based therapy, medication options and aftercare.
How long is residential rehab?
Most programs offer 30, 60 or 90 days. Many people benefit from 60 to 90 days of total care, including outpatient, and step down to outpatient care afterwards.
Should I trust online “best rehab” rankings?
Be careful. Many “best rehab” lists are paid or run by treatment companies. Verify licenses and accreditation yourself.
Is it OK to visit a rehab before admission?
Many programs offer tours or video walk-throughs. It is a good sign if they welcome questions.
Is non-12-step rehab as effective?
Programs built on evidence-based therapy and, when appropriate, medication have solid research behind them. Many non-12-step programs also welcome any support group you find helpful.
What is dual diagnosis?
It means having a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time, such as alcohol use disorder with depression. Treating both together tends to work better than treating them separately.
Do sober living homes provide treatment?
No. Sober living homes don’t provide treatment and don’t need a DHCS license, so ask about house rules, staffing and certification.
Licenses and safety
How do I check a rehab’s license in California?
Residential and detox programs in California are licensed by the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). Search the facility on the DHCS licensed and certified facilities list, and confirm the address and the services it is licensed for match what you were told.
What is the difference between licensed and certified?
In California, DHCS licenses residential treatment facilities and certifies programs, often outpatient, that meet its standards. Many residential programs have both.
Is accreditation required?
No, but Joint Commission or CARF accreditation shows a program has passed an independent quality review. You can confirm Joint Commission accreditation on Quality Check.
How do I report a problem with a rehab?
You can file a complaint with DHCS Licensing and Certification about a licensed or unlicensed facility.
Privacy
Will my employer find out I went to rehab?
Not from your treatment team. Providers need your written consent to share substance use treatment records. If you use FMLA leave, your employer learns you have a serious health condition, not the details.
Where do celebrities go to rehab in California?
Many well-known programs are in Malibu, the Hollywood Hills and the Palm Springs area. Admissions are kept confidential unless a person chooses to share them.
How private is a luxury rehab?
Most use unmarked residences, private rooms and strict visitor rules, and many already require staff confidentiality agreements. Ask to see the policy, and how they handle media requests.
Can I bring my phone or laptop?
Some luxury and executive programs allow limited device use; others don’t. Ask before you book if staying reachable for work matters.
Is my call confidential?
Yes. Calls to our at-home detox line are free and confidential, and we don’t put ad-tracking pixels on call buttons or forms. Facility numbers on this site ring the facility directly.
For families
Should we stage an intervention?
Structured, professionally led interventions can help, but confrontational surprise interventions can backfire. CRAFT is a gentler, evidence-based alternative.
Can I force an adult into rehab?
Generally no. California has limited involuntary holds for people who are a danger to themselves or others, or gravely disabled. For an emergency, call 911.
What if my loved one refuses treatment?
Keep the door open, keep the options ready, and look after yourself. Many people say yes on the second or third conversation.
Can family visit during rehab?
Most programs allow visits after the first week or two and offer family therapy sessions. Policies vary, so ask each facility.
About this site
How do you check the facilities you list?
We match each facility’s address to the public California DHCS facility list and show the license number, type, beds, expiration and the date we checked. We have not toured the facilities, and a listing is not an endorsement, so confirm the license yourself before you pay.
Do you take calls for these facilities?
No. Every phone number on a facility listing rings that facility directly. We are not paid per call or admission.
Are featured listings paid?
Yes. Featured placements are a flat monthly fee, always labeled as paid, and shown in random order. Our guides and profiles are never for sale.
How does a facility get listed or corrected?
Basic listings are free. Facilities can request a listing, a featured placement or a correction through the form on our List Your Program page.
