Becker’s list includes California programs such as Passages Malibu (listed at $64,500 per 30 days) and the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage (listed at about $33,000 to $67,750 per month, depending on needs). Ask any program for its current price in writing.

What drives the price

Two programs with the same view can differ a lot in what you actually get.

Room and setting

Private rooms, ocean or canyon views and very small resident numbers cost more.

Medical intensity

On-site doctors, 24-hour nursing and psychiatric care add cost, and value.

Length of stay

30, 60 or 90 days. Longer stays cost more but often lower relapse risk.

Extras

Chef, massage, fitness, equine or spa services may be bundled or billed separately.

What insurance usually covers

Under the Affordable Care Act, treatment for substance use disorders is an essential health benefit, and federal parity law limits plans from covering it less generously than other medical care. In practice:

  • Usually covered in part: medically necessary detox, therapy, psychiatric care and medications.
  • Usually not covered: private suites, chefs, spa services and other amenities.
  • PPO plans are more likely than HMOs to pay part of an out-of-network luxury program.
  • Medi-Cal and HMO plans rarely cover private luxury programs, but do cover treatment at in-network providers.

Before you pay a deposit, ask the program for a written verification of benefits and an estimate of your out-of-pocket cost.

More on insurance and luxury rehab

Why is luxury rehab so expensive?

Small numbers of residents, high staff ratios, private homes in expensive neighborhoods and extras like chefs and wellness services. The clinical care itself is a smaller share of the price than many people expect.

Is a more expensive rehab better?

Not automatically. Licensing, accreditation, clinical staff and aftercare matter more than price. How to choose.

Can I pay in installments?

Some programs offer payment plans or work with medical lenders. Read the terms carefully and avoid large non-refundable deposits.

Is at-home detox cheaper?

It depends on how many days of 24-hour nursing you need. Ask for a written quote after the assessment.
