When detox needs medical care
Some withdrawals can be dangerous without medical support.
Heavy drinking
Alcohol withdrawal can start 6 to 24 hours after the last drink and can turn dangerous.
Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin)
Stopping suddenly can cause seizures. Doses are tapered under a doctor.
Opioids or fentanyl
Withdrawal is intense, and relapse after detox carries a high overdose risk.
Past seizures or DTs
A history of withdrawal seizures or delirium tremens means detox should be medical.

What happens at a luxury detox center
Medical assessment
A clinician reviews your health, what you use and how much, and any past withdrawals, then sets a safe plan.
Stabilization, days 1–7
Nurses and doctors manage symptoms around the clock with medication where needed, so you stay safe and as comfortable as possible.
Step into treatment
Detox treats the body. Once you are stable, the team helps you move into residential or outpatient care for the rest.
At a facility or at home?
| At a private facility | At home or a destination of your choice | |
|---|---|---|
| Medical care: | 24/7 staff on site | 24-hour 1:1 nurse on site |
| Doctor: | on-site medical team | daily provider visit, in person or telehealth |
| Privacy: | private residence | your home or a destination you choose |
| Next step: | moves into residential care | outpatient or residential care |
At-home detox isn’t safe for everyone. Severe alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause seizures, so a medical assessment always decides. How at-home detox works.

How long does detox take?
Acute withdrawal usually lasts 3 to 7 days, and most medical detox stays run 5 to 10 days. Alcohol and benzodiazepine detox can take longer, because doses are tapered slowly to prevent seizures.
Can I detox at home safely?
For many people, yes, with the right medical setup. Our at-home detox partner has an addiction-specialist provider evaluate you within 24 hours and see you daily, in person or by telehealth, while a nurse stays with you 1:1, 24 hours a day. At-home detox is still not right for everyone: a history of withdrawal seizures or DTs, or serious health conditions, can mean a facility is safer. A medical assessment decides.
Does insurance cover detox?
Medically necessary detox is an essential health benefit under the Affordable Care Act, so most plans cover part of it, often more with PPO plans. Private suites, chefs and spa services are usually paid out of pocket. Ask for a written verification of benefits first.
Will my employer find out?
Not from your treatment team. Federal privacy rules (HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2) protect substance use treatment records, and providers need your written consent to share them. If you take job-protected leave under FMLA, your employer learns you have a serious health condition, not the details.
