What opioid withdrawal is like

Rarely life-threatening on its own, but hard enough that most people can’t push through alone.

Timing

Symptoms often start 8 to 24 hours after short-acting opioids. Fentanyl can be less predictable.

Symptoms

Aches, chills, sweating, stomach upset, anxiety, insomnia and intense cravings.

Medication helps

Buprenorphine or methadone ease withdrawal and cravings; doctors time the first dose carefully.

Overdose risk

Tolerance drops fast after detox, so relapse carries a high risk of overdose.

How long does opioid withdrawal last?

Acute symptoms usually peak in 1 to 3 days and ease within about a week for short-acting opioids. Fentanyl and long-acting opioids can take longer.

Why is fentanyl detox different?

Fentanyl can stay in the body longer than expected, so starting buprenorphine too early can cause sudden, severe withdrawal. Experienced prescribers time it carefully.

Should I stay on medication after detox?

For many people, yes. Staying on buprenorphine or methadone lowers the risk of relapse and overdose. It is a medical decision you make with your provider.

Can opioid detox be done at home?

Often, with 24-hour 1:1 nursing and daily provider visits. Heavy fentanyl use or other health problems may point to a facility.
