What happens, day by day

Using alcohol detox as an example, a typical medically supervised stay looks like this:

  • Day 1: assessment, vital signs and labs; withdrawal medication starts as symptoms appear.
  • Days 2–3: usually the hardest stretch. Nurses check symptoms often and adjust medication.
  • Days 4–5: physical symptoms ease; sleep and appetite begin to return.
  • Days 6–7: medication is tapered off and the team plans the next level of care.

What changes how long detox takes

  • The substance, the dose and how long it has been used
  • Using more than one substance, such as alcohol with benzodiazepines
  • Past withdrawal seizures or delirium tremens
  • Age, liver function and other health conditions

Detox is the start, not the treatment

Detox clears the body and gets you through withdrawal safely. It does not treat the reasons substance use took hold. Most people go on to residential care, an intensive outpatient program, or regular therapy, often with medication.

A 30-day program usually lasts 3 to 6 weeks, and many people benefit from 60 or 90 days of total care. Luxury residential rehab · At-home detox

How long does someone stay in a detox center?

Usually 5 to 10 days, longer for benzodiazepines or heavy fentanyl use.

Can detox be shorter?

Rapid detox programs exist, but faster is not always safer. Ask what monitoring is in place.

How long does at-home detox take?

About the same as facility detox. A nurse stays on site 24 hours a day until treatment is complete.

When do cravings stop?

Physical withdrawal ends within days to weeks, but cravings can come and go for months. That is why aftercare matters.
