Common co-occurring conditions

NIDA notes that about half of people who experience a mental illness will also experience a substance use disorder at some point.

Anxiety and panic

Alcohol and benzodiazepines are often used to quiet anxiety, and then make it worse.

Depression

Low mood and substance use feed each other. Both need treatment at the same time.

Trauma and PTSD

Trauma-focused therapy (such as EMDR or CPT) is a core part of good programs.

Bipolar disorder

Needs careful psychiatric care and medication management alongside recovery.

What integrated treatment looks like

Full psychiatric assessment

A psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner assesses mental health, not just substance use.

One team, one plan

Therapists, medical staff and psychiatry meet and adjust the plan together.

Ongoing psychiatric care

Medication and therapy continue after discharge, with a named provider.

Questions to ask a dual diagnosis program

  • Is there a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner on staff, and how often will I see them?
  • Which evidence-based therapies do you use (CBT, DBT, EMDR)?
  • Is your license and accreditation for mental health as well as substance use treatment?
  • How do you handle medication for anxiety, depression or sleep during and after detox?
  • Who will I see for psychiatric care after discharge?

A program that only treats the substance use, and sends you home with no mental health plan, leaves half the problem in place.

What dual diagnosis care costs

$30,000 – $65,000

typical for 30 days of luxury residential care

Psychiatric care is clinical, so insurance often covers more of it than of the amenities.

What is dual diagnosis?

It means having a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time, such as alcohol use disorder with depression. Treating both together tends to work better than treating them separately.

Should I stop my psychiatric medication before rehab?

No. Never stop prescribed medication on your own. Bring a full list to intake so the medical team can review it.

Can dual diagnosis be treated at home?

Detox can sometimes happen at home with 24-hour nursing. Ongoing psychiatric and therapy care then continues in outpatient or residential treatment.

How long does treatment take?

Most residential stays run 30 to 90 days, followed by months of outpatient therapy and psychiatric follow-up.
