SMART Recovery

Whole-person care
Sleep, nutrition, movement and mindfulness, alongside clinical treatment.
How a holistic program fits together
Clinical core
Medical care, psychiatry and evidence-based therapy do the heavy lifting.
Wellness layer
Yoga, meditation, massage, acupuncture or fitness support the body and mood.
Your support system
SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery or other groups, chosen by you.
A fair warning about “holistic”
Wellness activities help people feel better and stay in treatment. They don’t treat addiction on their own. Be careful with any program that leads with spa services and is vague about who the therapists are, how many therapy hours you get, or what happens if withdrawal turns medical.
Malibu is known for well-established non-12-step programs, and Los Angeles has many smaller private residences with a holistic focus. Whatever the setting, check the license and the clinical schedule first.

Is non-12-step rehab as effective?
Programs built on evidence-based therapy and, when appropriate, medication have solid research behind them. What matters most is staying engaged in treatment and aftercare.
Can I still go to AA if I want to?
Yes. Many non-12-step programs welcome any support group you find helpful.
What is SMART Recovery?
SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. It uses tools from cognitive behavioral therapy and meets in person and online.
Do holistic programs offer medical detox?
Some do on site; others arrange detox first. If you are physically dependent, make sure detox is medically supervised, at a facility or at home.
