How to Help a Loved One Get Into Rehab

What to say, what to avoid, and how to have options ready before the conversation.

Calls to (888) 530‑5153 are answered by our at-home medical detox partner, not by this site. Free and confidential. Facility listings link straight to each facility.

Before you talk

Have options ready

Know two or three programs, or an at-home detox option, so a “yes” can turn into a plan the same day.

Pick a calm moment

Talk when they are sober and you are calm, not in the middle of a crisis or an argument.

Use “I” statements

Say what you have seen and how it affects you, without labels like “addict.”

What helps, and what doesn’t

Families make a real difference, most often with patience.

Helps: specific concern

“I noticed you missed work twice this month, and I’m worried.”

Avoid: ultimatums in anger

Threats made in anger rarely hold and can end the conversation.

Helps: CRAFT

Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is an evidence-based approach for families.

Look after yourself

Al-Anon, SMART Recovery Family & Friends or a therapist can support you too.

In danger right now? Call 911. Thinking about suicide? Call or text 988.

Two ways to start detox

If they say yes, detox can begin at a private facility or at home.

In your own home

  • 24-hour 1:1 nursing care, on site
  • Daily visits with an addiction medical provider
  • At home, or a destination of your choice

At a private facility

  • Round-the-clock medical monitoring
  • Best for heavy alcohol, benzodiazepine or opioid use
  • Moves straight into residential care

Compare private programs and contact each facility directly. We don't take calls on their behalf.

At-home detox isn't safe for everyone. Severe alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause seizures, so a medical assessment always comes first.

Should we stage an intervention?

Structured, professionally led interventions can help, but confrontational surprise interventions can backfire. CRAFT is a gentler, evidence-based alternative.

Can I force an adult into rehab?

Generally no. California has limited involuntary holds for people who are a danger to themselves or others, or gravely disabled. For an emergency, call 911.

What if they refuse?

Keep the door open, keep the options ready, and look after yourself. Many people say yes on the second or third conversation.

Will at-home detox feel less scary for them?

For many people, yes. Staying home with a nurse 24 hours a day can make the first step easier.
